So when I hit the scene in Liverpool, I startled a lot of the drummers that were hanging around, because they hadn't heard of me and all of a sudden I was getting gigs and playing over the place. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. Well, how do you do that and use it at the same time? Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. When you have one or the other, its just not enough. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. I just love it. RM: Of all the albums you've played on, which ones stand out in your mind? Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. But it was just great. I leave a gap on the downbeat and upbeat so if I want to play the snare there, it cuts right through without being diminished by the low-end sound of the bass drum. Im looking at it very simply. He started playing violin, but he later changed to drums. He offered me the gig with him at 20 pounds a week, which at that point, was like 60 bucks. And that is sort of a drag. Almost exactly like the panic I felt before I got into the band, Journey. I said, Im gonna get it done. I didnt talk about how he still gets paid like a motherfucker even though he shouldnt be. RM: You've done quite a bit of recording. The more accurately you play something and make it more defined, the better it can be used as music. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. RM: I noticed you using traditional grip at times. My band was there playing and Frank was on stage introducing the bands. I was using alcohol for many, many years, to numb myself. AD: Completely ad-Iib. Thats right. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. Now, have I perjured myself? And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. And I said, I am _not _gonna tour and sit on a stool. That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. RM: What kind of music was Blue Whale playing? leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. Okay. When they were uncertain. You had millions of fans and sold a ton of records. Solo career. And he will not allow me to have his number.
